Welcome to Our New House… in 1978!

It’s here! The day when we can finally begin sharing our new home! And we’re kicking it off with what else but a period photoshoot?? Of COURSE we had to! 70’s outfits in our 70’s house, photographed and edited as if it actually were the 70’s? Naturally. So grab a bevy, kick back, turn on some Bee Gees, and pretend you knocked on the door of our new house on this day in 1978 and the couple below greeted you.

Walking into our new house is sort of like walking back in time. The original features that were ahead of the times in 1978 when it was built are still in tact. The built-in record player and stereo. Intercoms with built in clocks throughout the house. A spiral staircase with brass railing.

The home was built by a prominent Utah businessman (his daughter actually reached out to me on instagram! More on that later!) and it was THE house back in the day! The things that made it awesome back then are what made us love it today– tall ceilings, a ton of windows, large rooms, and attention to detail with hand laid parquet flooring.

Could you die over that floor?! I’m crossing all my fingers and toes we can refinish it! The pattern is so beautiful.

I know we’re talking about the house, but don’t you think Jon was born in the wrong decade?? He was MADE for the 70’s!

The kitchen will be getting a major overhaul, but it still has the original hand-painted tile backsplash. It is so neat to look very closely at each tile and notice the oh-so-slight differences.

I told our photographer, the talented Veronica Mielke, I wanted to use vintage Better Homes & Gardens as our guide for this shoot, and she nailed it. I even ordered the edition of the magazine from this month in 1978, the year the home was built, to use as a prop and our reference. Note the girls holding it in a few photos, and it placed on the counter in the kitchen above.

I scoured eBay for the right clothing and accessories for our family. Veronica edited the photos to look like they came straight out of the magazine and she nailed it. I mean, come on. The girls look like a vintage Sears ad!

And a few more because I had photos exactly like this when I was little– didn’t you??

Huge thank you to Veronica for making my vision a reality! And buckle up folks, we start sharing new house content next week! Get ready for some EPIC before photos!
